Fall of California

September 28th, 2012

Shorter days put scarves
on all the window mannequins. Trees
flaunt,
pretend they don’t know
what month it is.

But the crows
have come, and they drop walnuts
on the roof, lending depth
to the day’s

music and I
make soups, rebelliously,
boiling down bisques in 94
degree weather
which we eat,
sweating,
our feet dangling over the side
of the pool. We do

what we must.

I wrote a letter to a friend who was kind enough to point out this poem hiding amongst the words.

  1. I love it. My soup-making begins with the lashing rains and gray skies….love that you eat it over the pool, feet dangling:)

  2. As spontaneous as always … amazing how you end up writing poetry without realising it!

(There was that awesome haiku you once wrote , accidently, in perfect 5-7-5!)

Well done to your friend in seeing the poetry in the letter.

The structure of the lines in this found poem is great too … drifting, meandering of their own free will !

    • I was thinking of that, Gabri, when this came about. All line break/arrangement credit goes to my friend. i have no great gift for structure.

      • Your friend did a great job with the structuring … it visually reinforces the essence of your thoughts.

  3. I imagine that even your shopping lists contain poems, dear friend.

  4. I love watching your eyes ~ move
